This weekend (3/7-3/9)

Ugh. Once again there is a ton of cool shit going on this weekend, the same weekend as my Army Reserve commitment. As usual. Yay.

Tonight features another installment of the JDS show series for San Antonio's First Friday event.

Tomorrow night a show featuring Freesteppa from Mannheim, Germany was supposed to be taking place with local support by the JDS selectas, however, I have not seen any updated information as to whether the show is going to be held due to Freesteppa's tour cancellation. Apparently there were visa issues he encountered upon getting off the plane in Minnesota. Watch this space for any updates.

Saturday features this month's installment of Houston's Gritsy shows, with Joe Nice of New York once again stepping behind the decks alongside the Gritsy players.

DJ Shrimp - Freedom Set 2/2008

This is a set made up from the tracks played in a set at the Freedom show in Austin about a week ago by the one and only DJ Shrimp. There are a lot of liquid and techy dancefloor goodies, so be sure to check this mix out. I have to admit, I giggled a little bit at the opening "big ups" message from Shrimp, but otherwise, really enjoyed this mix. Can't wait to jam it out in the car.

Brach - Hays County Hustle

This guy's been around for quite a while now mixing it up in Austin and SA back in the day. At some point, he took a break from mixing to do whatever it was he was doing. Somewhere along the line, he started to get back into playing in public and releasing mixes. Well let me say, the sabbatical did some good things. His first new DnB mix to come out was this one, the Hays County Hustle. What a delightful mix, from the chilled hip hop beats and jazzy notes of the intro, to some tight scratching and great track selection. There were also some very well-done blends in there that reminded me of how I still have so far to go to ever progress as a DJ. So here's to you, Brach. Big ups, homie, Lovin' it.

UPDATE/EDIT: My bad, I thought that was my man Brach doin' the scratchin', however it was already on the song. Damn.

Redeyes January '08 Studio Mix

Let me just say this: THIS. MIX. IS. HOT.

Now I know the whole point of this blog was focusing on Texas talent, but this one is too good to not post. OK to pull a Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, Sol.ID, who is from Houston, recently played some sets in Europe alongside both Redeyes and Will Miles; and they also have some collaborations forthcoming. There it is, the Texas tie-in. I have listened to it three times today and it's still exciting as shit. I dunno, maybe I'm just really feeling the deep vibes but wow. Do NOT sleep on this mix.

From Breaksblog:
It’s been a while since the last Mix on Breaksblog by Toulouse very own DJ Redeyes. Finally he's back with a bag full of soul dripping Drum and Bass Tunes to sweeten up your Sunday. Tunes by Seba & Krazy, Lynx, Perez, Kjell, Miles, Eveson and many more.
Supercrisp 320kbps.

Past week update

So I've been somewhat slacking in the whole music and show department. I did hit up the Herd's show out at Salute thrown by JDS. Zero, Tyrant, and I/O played some rad sets, lots of original pressure dropped and some good vibes. It was good catching up with some of the fam from the TXDNB massive.

Interview in the works

Watch this space for an upcoming spotlight on Lost Prophet, part of the highly successful duo Autumn, who have been making some big waves in the DnB scene.

This week's events

Tonight I will be playing out in Austin at the venerable Plush (7th & Red River) as part of the new Konkrete Jungle series, which took over from Mental Note during the fall/winter. Also playing will be Lotek (his triumphant return to the decks) and KDH from the Everyday Junglists.

This Thursday will feature Empress, making her debut in San Antonio at Dolce (1604 & Sonterra), hosted by Audiotek Events. Also playing: Phoenix, Soze, Bubbs, and me. Sound will be reinforced by Audiotek. Event is 21+, $7 presales available, $10 at the door on the night of the show.
